Bruce Kehr, M.D., CEO of InforMedix joins Craig to discuss their product the Med-eMonitor System as The Medication Adherence Solution for disease management and retail products markets. InforMedix has integrated a patient-interactive monitoring device, hardware, software and networked communications system to enable disease management programs, chronically ill patients and their loved ones, and medical researchers to efficiently monitor and manage patients’ medication and care plan adherence, clinical response, and drug safety.

Some of the things they discuss are:

1. Where did the idea for the device come from?

2. How does the device work?

3. How is it programmed over the web?

4. How is the device monitored?

5. Is it portable?

6. Why is the device so important?

7. What types of patients would benefit from the device? Patients with Heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, severe mental illness, HIV, transplant patients, Alzheimer’s disease. Geared toward anyone that is on a complex medication regiment. Where taking the medications at the prescribe time is critical.

8. What is the average cost? Is it covered under any insurance?

9. Who have you partnered with?

InforMedix and excelleRx Team to Ensure Consumer Adherence with Prescribed Medications

ADT and XLHealth Team to Monitor Medication Compliance of Participants in Medicare Program Utilizing InforMedix Digital Technology

10. Tell us how the University of Pennsylvania using the device?

11. Is the device patented? With a pioneer patent position and a portfolio of 29 issued and pending patents, InforMedix’ IP is on a rock solid foundation for growth.

Bruce Kehr, M.D.

Bruce is currently Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO of InforMedix, Inc, and is the Founder of InforMedix. He is also the Chairman of the Board at the Institute on Aging at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Kehr is a forensic consultant in neuropsychiatry and traumatic brain injury and a practicing physician. Since 1981, Dr. Kehr has served as founder and President of Contemporary Psychiatric Services, a psychiatric group practice. He has actively written and lectured in the field of medication noncompliance, is recognized as an expert in the field of medication noncompliance, and has lectured on neuropsychiatry aspects of traumatic brain injury. Dr. Kehr received his BA from the University of Pennsylvania, followed by an MD from the Georgetown University School of Medicine.

About InforMedix:

InforMedix boasts a strong intellectual property portfolio that includes 15 issued and 14 pending patents. Most notably, the company owns the pioneer patents to technologies that provide dose-response data, a critical component to optimizing all clinical drug trials and disease management programs. In fact, the company’s patents have been cited as prior art by patent examiners in over 150 other issued patents.

InforMedix’ patent claim protection falls into two categories. First are those that cover Med-eMonitor-like devices that contain medication containing compartments plus the patient alerting and monitoring keys and screen. Second are those that do not require the device to contain medication compartments. These claims are directed to the monitoring function and signaling of the patient, and extend into the realm of non-containment electronic diaries populated by Palm, iPaq and other PDA and PC entrants. Across these patents, the data communication may be by various means including telephone line, Internet data connection, wireless link or other interface with a communication port.

Guy F. Pugh, MD the Medical Director, Primary Care at the Marino Center for Progressive Health, Cambridge, Mass. joins Craig to discuss a safe, non-drug treatment option for high blood pressure called RespeRate.

More than 65 million Americans have high blood pressure. Unfortunately, even with the traditional treatment methods of diet, exercise and medication, 70 percent of that population is unable to reach their lower blood pressure goals or can’t tolerate the side effects of medications. Leaving high blood pressure untreated can be dangerous and may lead to heart attack, stroke and kidney and heart failure.

There are alternative treatments available that can be used in conjunction with medication or other lifestyle modifications to treat this common, yet serious condition.

RESPeRATE is a personal therapeutic device that is FDA-cleared for over the counter sale and guides patients through a series of paced-breathing exercises. RESPeRATE is a safe, non-drug, clinically proven treatment option for those who have high blood pressure. The device guides patients through a series of paced-breathing exercises proven to reduce hypertension.

Mechanism:

RESPeRATE’s breathing sensor automatically analyzes an individual breathing pattern and creates a personalized melody composed of two distinct inhale and exhale guiding tones. Users listen to the melody through the headphones, and the body’s natural tendency to follow external rhythms will enable the user to easily synchronize his or her breathing to the tones. By gradually prolonging the exhalation tone to slow the user’s breathing, RESPeRATE leads the user to the therapeutic zone of less than 10 breaths per minute. Within a few minutes, the muscles surrounding the small blood vessels in the body relax, blood flows more freely, and blood pressure is significantly reduced.

RESPeRATE provides physicians with another option for their patients besides just increasing medication dosages or adding additional prescription medications to reduce high blood pressure.

As shown in seven clinical trials, RESPeRATE can lower blood pressure by up to 36 points systolic and 20 points diastolic, with average reductions of 14/8 points. On average, patients start to see significant results in 4-6 weeks, and the reductions are proven to last with continued use of the device.

RESPeRATE is available without a prescription.

The RESPeRATE device consists of a computerized control unit, about the size of a portable CD player, which is connected to a sensor that fastens around the patient’s abdomen, as well as a set of headphones. The RESPeRATE sensor analyzes the breathing rate and pattern of the user, then creates a personalized melody composed of two distinct tones: a high tone for inhalation and a low tone for exhalation. Using the body’s natural tendency to follow external rhythms, RESPeRATE gradually slows the user’s breathing rate to a “therapeutic zone” of less than 10 breaths per minute. Within a few minutes, the muscles surrounding the small blood vessels in the body relax and constricted blood vessels open up allowing blood to flow more freely-ultimately yielding a significant and lasting reduction of blood pressure.

Patients who use RESPeRATE for 15 minutes a day three to four times a week should see their blood pressure drop within eight weeks of use. Clinical studies have proven that RESPeRATE lowers high blood pressure by 14/8 points on average, with the top 10 percent experiencing a reduction of 36/20 points.

Proven To Lower Blood Pressure In 7 Clinical Studies

High blood pressure treatment options are not confined to blood pressure medications. Natural remedies for high blood pressure can be safe and effective. RESPeRATE’s ability to generate a significant and sustained reduction in blood pressure was substantiated in 7 separate clinical studies published in peer-reviewed medical journals.

The studies compared those who used RESPeRATE for 15 minutes a day for 8 weeks to a “control” group, using a walkman with relaxing music1, a home blood pressure monitoring 4,5 or both 2

Clinical studies design included four double-blind and randomized1,2,5,8, one controlled and randomized4, and two open-label studies3,6

There were 286 participants, average age of 58

78% of participants were already taking blood pressure medications, a third of whom were taking more then 3 medications.

Average initial office blood pressure of 150/90 mmHg despite using diet, exercise and/or medications.

An Important Addition to Your Blood Pressure Regimen

If you’re trying to lower your blood pressure with diet, exercise, and even medication, RESPeRATE can be an important addition. In seven clinical trials, RESPeRATE was found to be safe and effective for people from borderline to severe high blood pressure, some of whom were taking medications and some of whom were not.

RESPeRATE has been proven to be an effective high blood pressure treatment even when medications are not. A study published in the American Journal of Hypertension found that RESPeRATE significantly reduced uncontrollable blood pressure, even when three or more medications were taken at maximum dosage.

It is used after a colonoscopy or gastroscopy has been performed without revealing a diagnosis. This site has great visuals and information.

What is PillCam™ Capsule Endoscopy?

PillCam™ Capsule Endoscopy enables your doctor to examine the three portions (duodenum, jejunum, ileum) of your small intestine. Your doctor will use a vitamin-pill sized video capsule as an endoscope, which has its own lens and light source. While the video capsule travels through your body, images are sent to a datarecorder you will wear on a waistbelt. Afterwards your doctor will view the images on a video monitor.

Why is PillCam™ Capsule Endoscopy Performed?

PillCam™ Capsule Endoscopy helps your doctor determine the cause for recurrent or persistent symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, bleeding or anemia after a gastroscopy and a colonoscopy has been performed without revealing a diagnosis. In certain chronic gastrointestinal diseases the method can also help to evaluate the extent to which your small intestine is involved or monitor the effect of therapeutics. Your doctor might use PillCam™ Capsule Endoscopy to obtain motility data such as gastric or small bowel passage time.

The PillCam™ ESO video capsule is specifically designed to view the inner lining of the Esophagus. The capsule is equipped with miniature cameras on both ends and is about the size of a multi-vitamin, which can be swallowed easily.

Three sensor arrays are strategically placed on the patient’s chest and connected to a data recorder, worn on a belt around the waist.

The patient swallows the capsule lying down, and is then raised in a series of inclinations over a total of 5 minutes. The PillCam™ ESO travels through the esophagus by normal peristaltic waves, flashing 14 times per second, each time capturing images of the inner lining of the esophagus.

As it continues down the esophagus, the images captured may identify potential abnormalities, such as Esophagitis – which is inflammation of the lining of the esophagus often caused by Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease or GERD. Severity of symptoms is measured by a Grading system, and in severe cases, esophageal ulcers can appear.

Images captured by the PillCam™ ESO may also identify symptoms of Barrett’s Esophagus, which occurs as a result of abnormal cell growth in the lower esophagus. Columnar cells, typically found in the lining of the stomach, replace the squamous cells in the lining of the esophagus, which can lead to a cancerous condition.

During this five-minute procedure, the PillCam™ ESO captures images, which are transmitted to the sensor arrays. These images then travel from the sensors, along the wires to the DataRecorder™. At this point, the patient is permitted to get up and walk or remain seated for an additional 15 minutes to ensure the capsule has traveled the entire length of the esophagus. After dropping into the stomach, the pill is later excreted naturally.

Once all equipment is removed from the patient, the portable DataRecorder™ downloads the video images to a designated workstation, from which the physician views and assesses the results in order to recommend next steps in the patient’s treatment.

With the increase in mind-body diseases such as, IBS, IBD and Crohn’s Diseases affecting 10-15% of Americans, the Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine is at the forefront of gastroenterological health care issues.

Medical experts are talking about a new health epidemic — one that most thought was eliminated decades ago. It’s a lack of vitamin D.

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble substance (it dissolves in and can be stored by fat deposits in the body). Called the sunshine vitamin because people make their own when sunlight hits the skin, vitamin D is also found in fortified milk, one of the few food sources for this nutrient. With people spending more time indoors, especially as cold weather approaches, and the frequent swapping of milk for soda Americans aren’t getting the vitamin D they need.

Vitamin D (in its active form, which is created after several modifications by the body) functions as a hormone which means it binds to receptors in various tissues to influence the expression of genes, thereby affecting a range of processes, especially the regulation of calcium.Vitamin D deficiency causes muscle weakness, increasing the risk of falling and fractures. Vitamin D deficiency also has other serious consequences on overall health and well-being. There is mounting scientific evidence that implicates vitamin D deficiency with an increased risk of type I diabetes, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, hypertension, cardiovascular heart disease, and new epidemiologic evidence suggests that vitamin D may be protective against some common cancers. These include colon, breast, and prostate cancer.

The common assumption has been that with the fortification of milk, instituted in the United States in the 1930s, and casual exposure to sunshine, most people get all the vitamin D they need. It has become clear that vitamin D deficiency (usually defined as blood levels of less than 15 ng/mL [or nanograms/milliliter]) and insufficiency (less than 20 or according to most experts probably less than 30 ng/mL) are far more widespread than researchers had expected.

Science tells us that we’re already hard-wired to live to 100 and beyond.

There is no reason to fear living to 100 years of age or beyond.

There is no reason to think that you will be a burden to your children as you age.

You can set longevity goals for yourself and achieve them — How long do you want to live a happy and productive life — 75, 85, 95 or beyond.

Keeping your weight in check helps you age correctly — There aren’t obese centenarians!

Will their be enough — Yes their is always enough of whatever you need — it all depends on your mindset!

Increased life expectancy is affecting the U.S. economy every day as older entrepreneurs enter the global marketplace

Retirement is for the lazy and an outdated concept that has no place in todays society – Today many senior citizens are delaying retirement, going back to college, and starting new businesses.

If you knew you were going to live to be 100, how would you change your life this year? The bottom line is, today’s centenarians make up one of the world’s fastest growing segments of the population-but they got there by accident. Blindsided by their unanticipated longevity, they suffer a myriad physical, financial, emotional and spiritual ills. Luckily, the rest of us are getting advance notice that our parents and grandparents never received.

Based on Dr. Plasker’s bestselling wellness system, this revolutionary book reveals the secret to making the most of your extended lifespan. A unique, total-life program for balancing diet, nutrition, exercise, mental agility, creativity, finances, friends and family, work, community, and achieving a sense of purpose, The 100 Year Lifestyle offers the mindset, tools, and strategies to enjoy the highest quality of life as you age in years-without aging in body and mind.

Dr. Plasker inspires his patients and the public alike to realize “a long life, well lived.” A graduate of Life Chiropractic College and former owner of two highly successful family practices, Dr. Plasker is the founder of the Council on Family Wellness for the World Chiropractic Alliance. Featured on the Discovery Channel’s Forever Young and Connecting with Kids television network, he’s shared the stage with such luminaries as Dr. Barbara De Angelis, Dr. Wayne Dyer, and Dr. Andrew Weil. He’s sold more than half a million copies of his health and wellness guides, audiotapes, CDs, DVDs, and related material, which have been translated and distributed in more than fourteen countries. In just five years, Dr. Plasker’s wellness messages and products have reached nearly one million people around the world through second hand distribution by doctors.
