It’s the root cause of all health problems. He talks about how we changed our eating habits over a period of time. Basically, he strongly condemns the food factory and medical doctors. In this book he talks about how to eliminate the five forces, which makes us sick. Also, talking about the principles for restoring and maintaining health. He speaks about underlying causes of sickness.

Some information and facts mentioned by Dr. Hyman are written below to raise your awareness and consciousness.

According to Dr. Hyman:

“The fact is that the human body is complicated. It has evolved over hundreds of thousands of years. There is no one magic bullet that will shoot down all your health issues.”

“I believe, however, that once you stop falling for the myths of modern medicine and once you begin adopting the recommendations of Ultraprevention you will be on your way to a future of better health.”

“Ultraprevention, is a new paradigm of well-being and a system of thought, evaluation, and treatment derived from the scientific study of health. This system is based on remarkable truths uncovered by researchers over the last few years. These truths provide tremendous insights into our health and give us a framework that not only explains but unites the processes of health and illness.”

The five forces of illness are:

Malnutrition or sludge

Impaired Metabolism or burnout

Inflammation or heat

Impaired detoxification or waste

Oxidative stress or rust

“I believe that every person who pays attention to these forces will enjoy better health. My program is not just about getting better when you feel ill – it is about staying better so you don’t have to feel ill at all.”

“Many doctors talk about early detection as the cornerstone of prevention. But true prevention has to start long before detection can occur. Why? Patients are not an ambulatory collection of separate organs and various conditions – everything in the body is related. Imbalances or dysfunctions in one system lead to added stresses in the other systems. When these stresses and imbalances tax the organ reserve symptoms and illness result. Remember the old children’s song – the Thighbone is connected to the hipbone… No organism can exist in isolation, and neither can a body system. Most doctors don’t try to put the clues together to form a big pictures – we do!”

Consider the person who has a heart attack — The heart attack didn’t occur out of the blue. It was preceded by decades of plaque buildup caused by oxidation (rusting) of fats in the bloodstream, which became deposited in the wall of the artery, followed by activation of the immune system leading to inflammation (heat) in the wall of the artery and this was aggravated by malnutrition (sludge) and tipped over by the resulting stress on the detoxification (waste) system which finally made one of those plaques break open and rupture causing a clot to form that in turn caused your heart attack. There is a similar chain of events with all common illnesses. The beginnings of all these diseases are like the first in a long line of dominoes to fall in a reaction that may take years to complete eventually ending with the diagnosis of a preventable illness. We look for the very first domino and pick it up before it has a chance to fall. The human body can right itself, if given the chance to do so.

You can identify the illness if you conduct the test as per below parameters. Here are some answers to your queries if you have the above illness.

Test for Malnutrition:

Homocysteine — Blood test. The Ideal level is less than 9

Essential Fatty Acids — Blood test. Measured in the red blood cells (Test for Omega 3, 6, and other fatty acids directly)

Red Blood cell mineral levels — Blood test. Test for the levels of Magnesium, Selenium, Iodine, Zinc and Copper.

Methylmalonic Acid — Blood or Urine Test. High levels indicate a B12 deficiency.

Stool analysis — determines digestion and absorption. This will identify if foods are not being broken down and digested properly, or not being absorbed.

Test for Impaired Metabolism:

Urinary Organic Acids — By measuring acidic compounds in the urine provides a rich amount of information about nutritional aspects of cellular energy production.

Cardiometabolic stress testing: Measuring oxygen consumption during exercise (VO2 Max) tests for your mitochondria’s metabolic capacity.

Insulin response test: Normal insulin values at two hours are less than 25 and a normal glucose level is less than 140.

Lipid profile: Total cholesterol (LDL, HDL, triglycerides) A triglyceride level over 150 or a triglyceride to HDL ratio greater than 4.3 are highly suggestive of insulin resistance as is an HDL level of less than 40.

TSH or Thyroid Stimulating Hormone — Blood Test. Normal Level is 0.3 to 3.5 with the optimal being 1.0-2.0.

Free T3 and Free T4: Direct measurement of thyroid hormone in the blood in conjunction with the TSH level provides helpful information regarding thyroid function.

Thyroid antibodies: This test can detect people at risk of developing hypothyroidism because these antibodies attack the thyroid gland.

Resting metabolic rate. Clues us into the presence of an underactive thyroid gland.

Test for Inflammation:

C-reactive protein – The high-sensitivity CRP (Normal levels 0.7 or less)

Sedimentation rate (SED rate) High SED rates indicated inflammation (Normal values <20)

Fibrinogen level — Blood Test: Fibrinogen is one of the chief constituents involved in clotting and is made by the liver. It rises in response to inflammation.

Food Allergy blood tests: I measure the levels of antibodies (IgG, IgE) in the blood to a battery of different foods, potentially reactive foods.

Gluten/Celiac disease — Blood Test: Specific tests check for gluten allergy and include the anti-gliadin antibody test and the tissue transglutaminase assay.

Tests for Infections: Antibody tests (H. Pylori and Lyme disease), PCR tests and Cultures.

Test for Impaired Detoxification:

Detoxification challenge test (Blood and Urine Test) Delayed or impaired detoxification in a specific area can point to nutritional deficiencies involved in detoxification or weak enzyme systems in the liver.

Blood reduced Glutathione

Hair analysis: A screening test for heavy metal toxicity (mercury, arsenic, lead, and cadmium)

Urinary organic acids: Provides information about the body’s ability to detoxify certain solvents as well as hormones and carcinogens.

Test for Oxidative stress:

Lipid peroxides — Blood or Urine. Measuring the level provides and index of the body’s antioxidant status.

Superoxide dismutase (SOD), Gluathione peroxidase (GSHPx) and catalase. These are three of the most important natural anti-oxidant enzymes.

Glutathione — Blood Test

Urinary hydroxyl markers: Levels of free radicals such as catechol and 2,3-dihydroxybenzoate.

Blood anti-oxidant levels. Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Co-enzyme Q10 and Beta Carotene

Why do we test for these?

Most doctors don’t pay attention to any of these forces because they operated under this method — if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. The problem as I see it is that “it” may well be broken already. But most Doctors don’t realize this because they wait until something is damaged almost beyond repair before they act.

Knowledge provide by these tests gives us the advantage over other Doctors — they give us lead time to prevent them from occurring.

It is up to you. One of the greatest changes taking place in our medical system is the empowerment of the patient. Everyone needs to become their own health advocate.

Dr. Mark Hyman M.D
Author of UltraPrevention and UltraMetabolism

Dr. Mark Hayman – A biography

Mark Hyman, M.D., is author of the New York Times bestseller The UltraSimple Diet, co-author of the New York Times bestseller Ultraprevention (Scribner), which won a Books for a Better Life Award, creator of The Detox Box, and author of The Five Forces of Wellness. It is no doubt that exercise alone can drastically reduce stress.

Relationship and workplace stress. Marital problems, job difficulties, etc. all create physiologic change. Skin, heart rate, digestion, hormone, energy change with emotions.

Improper time management skills (one of the biggest factors)—we are living in a rushed, emergency-centered world. We are busier than we are successful.

If you look at the above causes, then it’ll only add stress and you’ll be more depressed. So, we need to heal our brain in a systematic way to eliminate stress. You can never eliminate stress, but can learn new techniques to build peace.

Fixing the above points one by one will not solve the problem, we require an internal biostructural changes. Maximized Living involves a unique biostructural alignment approach, and also promotes natural, drug free living and optimal nutrition for your body, allowing it to perform at optimal levels. When your body is in this state of wellness, it becomes self-regulating. It will actually heal itself in most cases, and all you have to do is not interfere with it. That entails avoiding harmful foods and substances that will get in the way of your body’s natural processes. It also means taking care of your body, staying active and keeping fit.

Using the Five Essentials, Maximized Living helps to remove the obstacles to wellness, and restore your body to the balance it naturally seeks:

Minimize your exposure to toxins (Eg: medications & refined foods)

Maximize nerve supply. All life and function revolves around this—all else is negligible.

Maximize the quality of your nutrition. Not diet, but making better choices of nontoxic fuel.

Maximize oxygen and lean muscle As little as 12 minutes per week! (www.12minutemakeover.com)

Maximize peace and relationships. Anger Management, Peace Management, Reprogramming Perceptions (the art of overcoming, moving from pain to purpose), and Effective Time Management

Literally thousands of people across the country have transformed their lives (and stress) with these easy principles. If you would like more information please click here.

Dr. Chris Niedzinski DC
Maximized Living Mentor

Dr. Chris Niedzinski – A biography

Dr. Chris Niedzinski is a Maximized Living Mentor in Farmington Hills, MI. He has one of the most successful Chiropractic practices in Metro Detroit, seeing hundreds of patients each week. He has trained with Drs Ben Lerner and Greg Loman-founders of Maximized Living. These Doctors have written NY Times Best-Selling Books based on Stress Management, Time Management, Nutrition, Exercise, and Chiropractic (Body by God, One-Minute Wellness). Dr. Chris is an expert on stress management and has helped many people transform their lives through the Maximized Living principles.

Maximized Living Inc. was established in 1999 and is located in Celebration, Florida, USA. The company was founded by Dr. Ben Lerner and Dr. Greg Loman. Now you can drink safe and pure water with CamelBak.

CamelBak was the first water-bottle company to remove BPA*** from all its water bottles, offering consumers a worry-free option in plastic water bottles. This will help people stay healthy by allowing them a convenient way to consume plenty of water.

It is important to have adequate hydration during summer and during strenuous activities; the typical CamelBak user is attuned to this and the company seeks to meet their needs.

CamelBak will continue to focus on delivering the most innovative hydration products. Until last year, polycarbonate, of which BPA is an ingredient, was included in all CamelBak bottles. CamelBak opted to eliminate polycarbonate from its bottles in response to customer demand for BPA-free products, and as of April 2008 all of CamelBak water bottle products have been made BPA-free. CamelBak’s customers appreciate how the company anticipates their needs and respond quickly.

Reusable bottles are environmentally preferable to temporary plastic bottles. Temporary or disposable plastic water bottles (PET plastics) fill up landfills. CamelBak’s ‘Choose to Reuse’ program highlights this.

Here are some tips on Hydration. For more detailed information, access Hydration 101.

Drink early and often

Freeze some water in your reservoir

Keep the water out of your drinking tube

Replace your electrolytes

Recognize the symptoms of heat illness and get out of the sun

Always keep water with you to all day events

Also mentioned below are some guidelines for easy cleaning and maintaining CamelBak bottles. This will keep it germ free and can use any number of time.

Fill reservoir with warm water and mild soap.

Clean with Reservoir Brush and Delivery Tube Brush.

Re-fill reservoir with 1 litre of water.

Add one cleaning tabler.

Shake reservoir until tablet is dissolved.

Let stand 5 minutes

Remove water from reservoir

Rinse reservoir thoroughly

Re-fill for drinking or dry completely before storage

By following these above disinfecting guidelines you can reduce common micro organisms and build up over 99.99%. In an emergency, you can also add a table spoon of bleach after Step 3. Be sure to rinse thoroughly.

To know more about CamelBak products, click here.

Note:
***Polycarbonate contains a manmade chemical called bisphenol A (BPA), which leaches from the plastic at levels dramatically higher than previously thought. The chemical has been linked to breast and prostrate cancer, brain damage, and disruptions of the endocrine system. While there have been worries over BPA in water bottles for years, the evidence is now clear and compelling: You should ditch your polycarbonate bottles and use something free of BPA, such as stainless steel or a new, BPA-safe plastic called Tritan.

Dave Carr
Global Category Manager
CamelBak Products LLC

Dave Carr – A biography

Dave Carr is the Product Manager for the Bottle Category at CamelBak. While he says there is no magic bullet for losing weight – there is a foolproof solution. To help combat the rise of heart disease he created THE REALITY DIET.

Designed for real people living in the real world, THE REALITY DIET allows people to enjoy the foods they love (carbs!), including pasta, waffles, rice, potatoes, bananas—even chocolate and wine. According to Dr. Schnur, “The Reality Diet’s one key fat-fighting ingredient, FIBER, is the single best predictor of success when it comes to weight loss. Fiber curbs hunger and significantly reduces the risk of heart disease and diabetes.” The Reality Diet outlines Dr. Schnur’s 2:90 rule, which states that for every 90 calories of food there should be at least two grams of fiber.

He will discuss why is fiber so important in weight loss and health and why low carb diets do not work. He will discuss why any quick fix solutions do not work and why even though there are thousands of diets our obesity rates continue to increase.

He will also address the role of exercise in weight loss and the role of diet pills in weight loss and which ways we can help our children avoid becoming overweight.

“Since our book was released last year, thousands of people got a dose of reality,” said Dr. Schnur. “Following our menu plans, they lost weight by eating healthy, tasty food that filled them up, but more importantly, cut down their chances of a heart attack or stroke.” Schnur went on to say, “If dieting were easy, we would be a nation of supermodels, but in reality, we’re a nation that’s 60 percent obese.”

About the Author:
Steven A. Schnur, M.D. is a board-certified internist and cardiologist and the founder of South Florida Cardiology Associates (www.heartprevention.com), the largest cardiology practice in South Florida, with 12 locations and 18 physicians. He received a fellowship in cardiology at Mount Sinai Medical Center, where he was chief medical resident. Dr. Schnur is President of HPS Consulting and counsels medical practices about patient management. Technology has provided us with online tools that help you record your caloric and food intake (just to keep you honest) and as well as online support groups that can help you through the tough times. There are fancy digital pedometers and heart rate monitors that enable you to track your steps and your level of cardiac fitness.

What is the down side to technology — the internet’s massive amount information much of which is erronous and leads to poor health/diet decision making.

Ashley’s website:

Welcome to the healthXchange

From Personalized Nutrition Plans to Grocery Store Tours, we provide the services you need to stay healthy… for both children and adults!

We have the background and experience to make us the best choice for your nutritional needs.

Ashley’s Bio:

Ashley Koff is a registered dietitian in private practice and on staff at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles. The daughter of a surgeon, Koff saw early on the pros and cons of today’s medical world. Her interest in preventive healthcare grew from learning to develop and personalize her own health regime as well as with her involvement in the media. Koff worked in advertising for a global food company for whom the research led her to travel and meet with consumers all over the country and abroad. Koff learned what people needed and wanted nutritionally and how food products available in the U.S., at that time, were not meeting those needs. She realized her efforts would be best utilized helping people to understand and make food choices that would optimize their health as well as satisfy their personal preferences.
She was educated at Duke and New York Universities and trained at LA+USC and Columbus Children’s hospitals. Passionate about the beneficial role of nutrients, herbs, and healing therapies utilized around the world, Koff supplemented her traditional dietetic education with training in these areas. Always one to be on top of current trends in medicine, health and wellness, Koff has completed integrative medicine coursework for certification as a certified clinical nutritionist (CCN). Her continuing education also includes on-line courses such as the Program in Integrative Medicine (Univ. of Arizona) and the Institute for Functional Medicine.

It is Koff’s unique blending of nutrition and integrative medicine as well as her in-depth knowledge of supplements, herbs, and health modalities such as Traditional Chinese Medicine, Macrobiotics, and Ayurveda, that make her sought after as a consultant and speaker. In fact, so impressive is her expertise that integrative medicine gurus like Dr. Andrew Weil’s Program in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona (PIM), Dr. Soram Singh Khalsa, and the doctors at the world renown Tao of Wellness in Santa Monica, all utilize her services with their patients. As the dietician consultant for PIM (Dr. Andrew Weil’s Program), Koff sees referrals, and teaches their medical fellows “All you need to know about nutrition but didn’t learn in medical school.” She’s also written an online education module for healthcare practitioners as part of their Nutrition Approaches to Optimal Health series.

In 2002, Koff founded the healthXchange (www.thehealthxchange.com), nutrition counseling and consulting company. She is the author of Recipes for IBS (Fair Winds Press), a cookbook and treatment plan for digestive wellness was released in February 2007. Recipes for IBS was purchased by several pharmaceutical companies to provide to their gastroenterologists additional instruction to improve the effectiveness of drug therapy.

In addition, Koff has shared her nutritional expertise on CNN, Entertainment Tonight, The Tyra Banks Show, MY13, FitTV’s The Ultimate Goal, and in magazines such as Allure, Cooking Light, Healing Lifestyles & Spas, In Style, In Touch Weekly, Shape, Teen Vogue, Yogi Times, and Weight Watchers. She is a regular contributor to modernmom.com and thecradle.com and was ranked by City Search (www.citysearch.com) as the Best of LA’s nutritionists/dietitians two years in a row (2005, 2006).

Koff loves to travel and connect with people in different places. She is fervent about health being attainable and sustainable for all demographics. Her clients love her for her joy of life, her sense of humor, and her deep caring for their well-being. It is no surprise that this charismatic woman has an A-List Hollywood clientele and is currently in development discussion for her own television show.
rcraigpetersonblog

Extreme Makeovers Aren’t Just For Hollywood Anymore

Aging

Extreme Makeover

Long Life

Nutrition

Self Improvement

Eve Michaels of Eve Michaels.com joins Craig to discuss how everyone can have their “WOW” no matter what their age and when you get your body, mind and spirit in sync, you’ll find your WOW! again. You will be delighted with the adventure of life.

CHANGE HOW YOU THINK ABOUT AGING

The most important thing you can do to start getting your “WOW” back is to change the way you think about aging. Healthy and positive aging is possible.

Most women were raised to believe that certain depressing things would happen to our bodies as we age, especially after having children. Even worse, we were taught that our personal worth would diminish with each year we live.

Nowadays, 50 is the new 30. I know. I am 53 years old and loving it.

At least twice a day affirm from the heart saying “I am growing younger, better, happier, healthier, wealthier and more full of life.”

Say it with feeling and total faith. Say it out loud during your daily prayers.

Think it as you drive, do chores, whenever. Remember that what you think about is what you’ll become. Please don’t let anyone tell you otherwise! You’ll be a happier woman believing that you are getting better all of the time.

FIND YOUR INNER SELF AND INDULGE DAILY WITH JOY

Whatever it is that really regenerates you, do it. Wellness, strength, stamina, good energy is our natural state. Do what it takes daily to nurture your body. Be good to it and it will be good to you.

Don’t get caught in your own time warp. You wouldn’t expect a 10 year-old computer program to serve your needs, so why expect that an outdated style will.

You need to learn what flatters your best features and accentuate them. Make the trends work for your body, shape and coloring.

Part of being modern is accurately communicating who you are. You don’t have to try to look twenty. But you must keep up with the trends. Your children will love it.

Your makeup should be updated every spring and fall. Your hairstyle needs to change at least every 2 years. It is used after a colonoscopy or gastroscopy has been performed without revealing a diagnosis. This site has great visuals and information.

What is PillCam™ Capsule Endoscopy?

PillCam™ Capsule Endoscopy enables your doctor to examine the three portions (duodenum, jejunum, ileum) of your small intestine. Your doctor will use a vitamin-pill sized video capsule as an endoscope, which has its own lens and light source. While the video capsule travels through your body, images are sent to a datarecorder you will wear on a waistbelt. Afterwards your doctor will view the images on a video monitor.

Why is PillCam™ Capsule Endoscopy Performed?

PillCam™ Capsule Endoscopy helps your doctor determine the cause for recurrent or persistent symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, bleeding or anemia after a gastroscopy and a colonoscopy has been performed without revealing a diagnosis. In certain chronic gastrointestinal diseases the method can also help to evaluate the extent to which your small intestine is involved or monitor the effect of therapeutics. Your doctor might use PillCam™ Capsule Endoscopy to obtain motility data such as gastric or small bowel passage time.

The PillCam™ ESO video capsule is specifically designed to view the inner lining of the Esophagus. The capsule is equipped with miniature cameras on both ends and is about the size of a multi-vitamin, which can be swallowed easily.

Three sensor arrays are strategically placed on the patient’s chest and connected to a data recorder, worn on a belt around the waist.

The patient swallows the capsule lying down, and is then raised in a series of inclinations over a total of 5 minutes. The PillCam™ ESO travels through the esophagus by normal peristaltic waves, flashing 14 times per second, each time capturing images of the inner lining of the esophagus.

As it continues down the esophagus, the images captured may identify potential abnormalities, such as Esophagitis – which is inflammation of the lining of the esophagus often caused by Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease or GERD. Severity of symptoms is measured by a Grading system, and in severe cases, esophageal ulcers can appear.

Images captured by the PillCam™ ESO may also identify symptoms of Barrett’s Esophagus, which occurs as a result of abnormal cell growth in the lower esophagus. Columnar cells, typically found in the lining of the stomach, replace the squamous cells in the lining of the esophagus, which can lead to a cancerous condition.

During this five-minute procedure, the PillCam™ ESO captures images, which are transmitted to the sensor arrays. These images then travel from the sensors, along the wires to the DataRecorder™. At this point, the patient is permitted to get up and walk or remain seated for an additional 15 minutes to ensure the capsule has traveled the entire length of the esophagus. After dropping into the stomach, the pill is later excreted naturally.

Once all equipment is removed from the patient, the portable DataRecorder™ downloads the video images to a designated workstation, from which the physician views and assesses the results in order to recommend next steps in the patient’s treatment.

With the increase in mind-body diseases such as, IBS, IBD and Crohn’s Diseases affecting 10-15% of Americans, the Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine is at the forefront of gastroenterological health care issues.

Medical experts are talking about a new health epidemic — one that most thought was eliminated decades ago. It’s a lack of vitamin D.

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble substance (it dissolves in and can be stored by fat deposits in the body). Called the sunshine vitamin because people make their own when sunlight hits the skin, vitamin D is also found in fortified milk, one of the few food sources for this nutrient. With people spending more time indoors, especially as cold weather approaches, and the frequent swapping of milk for soda Americans aren’t getting the vitamin D they need.

Vitamin D (in its active form, which is created after several modifications by the body) functions as a hormone which means it binds to receptors in various tissues to influence the expression of genes, thereby affecting a range of processes, especially the regulation of calcium.Vitamin D deficiency causes muscle weakness, increasing the risk of falling and fractures. Vitamin D deficiency also has other serious consequences on overall health and well-being. There is mounting scientific evidence that implicates vitamin D deficiency with an increased risk of type I diabetes, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, hypertension, cardiovascular heart disease, and new epidemiologic evidence suggests that vitamin D may be protective against some common cancers. These include colon, breast, and prostate cancer.

The common assumption has been that with the fortification of milk, instituted in the United States in the 1930s, and casual exposure to sunshine, most people get all the vitamin D they need. It has become clear that vitamin D deficiency (usually defined as blood levels of less than 15 ng/mL [or nanograms/milliliter]) and insufficiency (less than 20 or according to most experts probably less than 30 ng/mL) are far more widespread than researchers had expected.

About Dr. Mullin

Dr. Gerard Mullin is an authority on the transformative impact of nutrition on health as well as a leading expert on cutting edge Complementary and Alternative Medicine. He has been recognized as one of “America’s Top Physicians” by The Consumers’ research Council since 2004 and his articles have appeared in numerous medical journals including the Journal of the American Medical Association, the New England Journal of Medicine, Gastroenterology and The Journal of Clinical Immunology.

Dr. Mullin is Director of GI Complementary and Alternative Medicine as well as Director of Capsule Endoscopy at The Johns Hopkins Hospital’s Division of Gastroenterology and Liver Disease.

In addition to his work at Johns Hopkins, he is also on the faculty of The Center for Mind-Body Medicine’s groundbreaking program, Food As Medicine, the nation’s leading nutrition training program for physicians, medical school faculty and other health professionals.

About the Johns Hopkins Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology

U.S. News & World Report has ranked The Johns Hopkins Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Division as one of the top three GI programs in the United States for the ninth consecutive year.
