Android is not Android is not Android.  That means that there are many many versions of the operating system that must be updated and it is why most Android devices are sorely out of date with security patches and operating system updates.  One of the largest manufacturers of Android devices is Samsung and even they are finding it a complicated and long process to update its flagship smartphone to the latest version of Android. At times it is taking as long as 120 days to get your Android updates.
