Web-based tools fuel virtual collaboration
Roxanne Ravenel of SOHO Support Solutions LLC joins Craig to discuss the use of Web-based technologies and how they are a tremendously important tool for the SOHO market – solo entrepreneurs, small business owners, home-based businesses because it affords us many of the same luxuries that most only associate with the larger corporations.
Web-based tools fuel virtual collaboration saving both large and small businesses countless dollars in travel and the cost of some of the more traditional, pricier technology options. They also save the cost of having an IT person set-up and maintain those technologies.
Examples of web-based technology tools that are available to Small Office Home Office market include:
A Web-based intranet application – such as HyperOffice and eUnify allow a small business to easily share documents, task lists, calendars, contacts and more with clients and or fellow contractors. Both of these products are hosted by the vendor and are really simple to use and can be set-up in relatively little time. These programs are highly customizable. They allow you to customize the access of each user and even create customized areas for your specific clients. The recurring cost is only about $10 per user per month and there are no prohibitive start-up costs or long-term contracts.
Web-based conferencing – There are a variety of tools available from Skype including a web-conference room to conduct online meetings that allow you to share documents, PowerPoint presentations, and do desk-top sharing and more. Any small office is now able to conduct meetings, training sessions, workshops and more using these tools.
Time management tools – My Hours and other free time management applications allow contractors and other solo professionals to easily manage their time on client projects. They even include a Company Profile feature that allows one to connect with others and stay informed of their current status on particular projects.
Virtual PBX – Ring Central, Kall 8 and other vendors allow a small business owner to get an 800# number quickly and easily. It rings to any phone number, or series of numbers that you request. Voicemails can be retrieved via phone or delivered to you via email.
All these tools listed above help the small business to collaborate virtually with others.
