The U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) has approved the use of new BlackBerrys and Samsung Galaxy smartphones and tablets by government workers and military officials. The approval is a big deal for both companies, which want to pitch their gear to the government.
BlackBerry said that the Z10, Q10 and the PlayBook all have beenapproved for government use. BlackBerry hardware can be used by DOD employees and on DOD networks. The Z10 and Q10 both run BlackBerry’s new operating system, called BlackBerry 10.
The Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) has approved the use of Apple iOS 6 on the Department of Defense’s networks. By adding Apple iOS 6 to the Security Technical Implementation Guide (STIG) — a methodology for “locking down” information systems and software that might otherwise be vulnerable to attacks — the DOD has expanded the list of devices that it provides to military and government employees. The move is part of a larger effort by the DOD to build a multi-vendor mobile environment that supports a broad selection of devices and operating systems
