Janina Mattausch – Netatmo

Airing Date: October 17, 2015

Craig Peterson:  We’re joined right now by Janina Mattausch. We’re gonna talk a little bit about what they are doing over at Netatmo. The connected environment, connected universe really. The whole internet of things. Janina, welcome.

Janina Mattausch: Yeah. Thank you.

Craig: Why don’t you tell us a little bit about what Netatmo, and what Netatmo is doing here.

Janina: Yeah, sure.

Craig: What’s with the connected home?

Janina: Yeah. So our company is basically doing a consumer electronics company.

Craig: Uh huh.

Janina: That is trying or developing products for a better and connected lifestyle. So we have, right now, three products in the connected home area.

Craig: Uh huh.

Janina: And about one product in the connected beauty area.

Craig: Uh huh.

Janina: So we try and improve our users’ wellbeing and…

Craig: Uh huh.

Janina: Lifestyle basically.

Craig: Right. So, connected, what does that mean to you guys over at Netatmo? I know it means a lot of different things to different people. There’s so many devices.

Janina: Yeah sure. So connected means like to, uhm, basically you have a great… you have access to data that otherwise would be more difficult to get. So for example, with the weather station. You see at a glance what is going on. You can measure your environment.

Craig: Uh huh.

Janina: You see your indoor air quality. You see what’s going on outdoor. With JUNE, for example, I have it here. It’s a bracelet that measures your sun exposure. So all the data that would be not visible to me, like how much sun, how much UV am I consuming?

Craig: Uh huh.

Janina: Is visible, thanks to this connectedness with the smartphones.

Craig: Uh huh. Now this particular gadget that we’re looking at here, this JUNE.

Janina: Yeah.

Craig: We talked about this on the show before.

Janina: Uh huh.

Craig: I think, I don’t know if you were the person we spoke with, but…

Janina: No.

Craig:  You know, the whole vitamin d thing is so important. Without the vitamin d council on before, which is of course.

Janina: Uh huh.

Craig: What you’re getting from the sun.

Janina: Yeah.

Craig: And what you need that helps with preventing the heart attacks.

Janina: Yeah.

Craig: And just all kinds of things as well as of course the skin damage that can occur.

Janina: Yeah.

Craig: If you don’t get enough. So it gets difficult. So you guys over at Netatmo you’re involved now in all kinds of connected devices?

Janina: Yeah.

Craig: Apps, third party devices too?

Janina: Ah no. We’re developing everything in-house.

Craig: Uh huh.

Janina: So also for our newest product, the Welcome camera.

Craig: Uh huh.

Janina: We developed everything in-house.

Craig: So why don’t you tell us a little bit about that? The Welcome camera

Janina: Yeah. Sure.

Craig: Uh huh.

Janina: So, Welcome. The name is actually Welcome.

Craig: Uh huh.

Janina: And it’s a smart home camera that, um, that is able to recognize the faces it sees.

Craig: Uh huh.

Janina: And it will send you notifications about who it has been seeing.

Craig: Uh huh.

Janina: So you know for example, that your loved ones like your daughter would be home.

Craig: Uh huh.

Janina: You can also use it for example, for your elderly parents, to know they’re home safely and well.

Craig: Uh huh.

Janina: And so the camera basically connects you to what’s going on at your place.

Craig: Uh huh.

Janina: So you have an app that comes with it.

Craig: Uh huh.

Janina: You can see who’s home. You can see who’s away. You can go and like see your house in Livestream.

Craig: Uh huh.

Janina: And you can also review past events, footages, and see everything.

Craig: Uh huh.

Janina: Welcome’s designed also to protect your privacy. So we wanted to design a product that gives you reassurance without surveillance.

Craig: Right.

Janina: So this means that because we have face recognition technology that is embedded in the product, basically we can customize for each person if we want to get notifications for them or not.

Craig: Uh huh.

Janina: We can also customize if we want to record video for them or not.

Craig: Uh huh.

Janina: Or if you want to receive it always, never, only when they arrive.

Craig: Uh huh.

Janina: So basically, you can really adapt to each family members or each person’s needs.

Craig: Uh huh.

Janina: The activity of the camera. So let’s, for example you have a teenage daughter. Sher doesn’t want to record it on video.

Craig: Uh huh.

Janina: You can tell the app that, and the app will respect it and not record her.

Craig: Well that coz of that stupid boyfriend she has.

Janina: (Laughs)

Craig: But it’s all customizable in that way.

Janina: Yeah. Totally.

Craig: Yeah.

Janina: And also, we also protect the privacy of the data because we have local SD card storage.

Craig: Uh huh.

Janina: So all the video…

Craig: Oh…

Janina: And all the identification data’s stored locally on the camera’s SD card.

Craig: Uh huh.

Janina: The SD card is included.

Craig: Uh huh.

Janina: And it’s really like your data is in your hands.

Craig: Uh huh.

Janina: However, if somebody would take the camera.

Craig: Uh huh.

Janina: We still have a screenshot of each event in the cloud.

Craig: Uh huh.

Janina: So in case you need a backup, you still have that.

Craig: You still have it.

Janina: But there are no videos in the cloud.

Craig: So Netatmo.com, N-E-T-A-T-M-O…

Janina: Yeah

Craig: Is that the best place for people to go to find out more?

Janina: Yeah, exactly. You can also sign up to receive more information because it’s not available right now.

Craig: Uh huh.

Janina: It’s gonna be available in Q2 2015.

Craig: Now my wife, producer.

Janina: Yeah.

Craig: Was saying, does this also recognize strangers so you know when there’s someone different?

Janina: Yeah, exactly.

Craig: Can you also go, uhm, on the beach in the Caribbean, and someone comes to the door and I’d notify immediately about that person? Or how does the notification part of it work?

Janina: Yeah. So basically, the camera can distinguish between known people, recognized people and unrecognized people.

Craig: Uh huh.

Janina: So it would send you a notification: “Unknown face seen.”

Craig: Uh huh.

Janina: And basically you get this as a notification, so it’s very short. Very precise. You don’t have to, like, if it’s, for example, if it says: “Craig seen.”

Craig: Uh huh.

Janina: It’s very clear. So you don’t have to necessarily watch the video.

Craig: Uh huh.

Janina: Coz it’s already so clear. But if there is an unknown face, you could just click on the notification, then you go directly to the footage, and you can review who’s that unknown face that has been seen by the camera.

Craig: Ok. Very nice. Netatmo.com. Again, N-E-T-A-T-M-O.com to find out more and of course sign up if you want information about some of the future products. We’ve talked about some of the other products on the show before. They really can help improve lives so this can be interesting, see what you guys do going forward.

Janina: Sure.

Craig: Thanks for being with us.

Janina: Thank you very much.
