Evan Lazarus – Safe Family

Airing Date: October 24, 2015

Craig Peterson: If you have kids, you know you have to watch them. You have to be careful with their safety, who they meet with, where they go, what they do. We’re gonna talk right now with a new company that’s providing some new technology to help … some of those things. The name of the company is called Safe Family. You’ll find them online at oursafefamily.com. And were joined right now by Evan Lazarus. We’ll talk a little bit about what you’re doing. Evan welcome!

Evan Lazarus: Great! Hi, thank you for having me.

Craig: So let’s talk about this. New company.

Evan: Right.

Craig: You’re using some sensors. What’s Safe Family all about?

Evan: Well, Safe Family was actually developed by a 72-year-old entrepreneur by the name of Merle Freeman.

Craig: Uh huh.

Evan: She was concerned about these stories about these kids overheating in cars.

Craig: Uh huh.

Evan: So she said to us, we need to come up with a solution.

Craig: Uh huh.

Evan: So we developed a wearable that measures ambient temperature and heart rate.

Craig: Uh huh.

Evan: We included GPS location, boundary settings and a number of other safety features like band removal alerts as well.

Craig: Uh huh.

Evan: And all of these is operated through a full-functioning iPhone and android application.

Craig: Uh huh.

Evan: For parents.

Craig: Uh huh. So why is it important? I can understand GPS.

Evan: Sure.

Craig: You know the kid made it school, made it home, where they’re at. But why things like ambient temperature?

Evan: Well you know ambient temperature is an important thing you know, particularly when you’re concerned about kids overheating.

Craig: Uh huh.

Evan: Heatstroke, becoming incredibly cold. What we wanted to do is we wanna provide as much feedback for parents as possible about what their kids are doing. One of the things that we did include was activity tracking as well.

Craig: Uh huh.

Evan: Because of course, fitness wearables are very, very popular. But parents don’t necessarily know if their kids are sitting around doing nothing during the day while they’re at work or while they’re busy.

Craig: Right.

Evan: So, you know, this is about providing parents as much feedback as possible about the whereabouts of their kids, the wellbeing of their kids.

Craig: Uh huh.

Evan: And of course, we included some fashion in there too.

Craig: Well, fashion can be boring depending on the kid.

Evan: It is fun.

Craig: Absolutely.

Evan: Yeah it is fun.

Craig: So now this feed, feeds back to the parents’ smart device.

Evan: Correct.

Craig: I assume.

Evan: Yes, yes…

Craig: And how is the device itself communicating? Do you clip it on a backpack?

Evan: Absolutely no. It’s a wrist band

Craig: It’s a wrist strap.

Evan: It’s a wristband. It’s a wearable.

Craig: Uh huh.

Evan: It uses G… it’s on the GSM cellular network.

Craig: Uh huh.

Evan: So it’s a self-contained unit. It doesn’t not need to be tethered to a cellphone.

Craig: Uh huh.

Evan: So it has a, you know, it has a data plan that it comes with. It’s, as I said it’s GSM so it’s actually is internationally capable.

Craig: Uh huh.

Evan: Right now it’s North and South America and the UK capable.

Craig: Uh huh. Yeah, well GSM is pretty broad.

Evan: It sure is.

Craig: Frankly, around the world.

Evan: It absolutely is.

Craig: So the kid, you put it on the kid.

Evan: Absolutely.

Craig: It tracks them. Have you had pushback from the kids or does it help them feel a little more safe?

Evan: Absolutely not.

Craig: Uh huh.

Evan: You know, we’ve made it really fine. It’s a nice colorful band. Fun to wear.

Craig: Uh huh.

Evan: It’s not complicated at all. And you know, when we were shooting our commercial, we did some consumer testing as well.

Craig: Uh huh.

Evan: We put it on the kids. It’s a nice soft touch made from medical grade polyester. So it’s soft to the touch.

Craig: Uh huh.

Evan: And it’s hypo-allergenic. It also has these fun fashion bands that you can interchange. Different colors, and those are made from antibacterial plastic as well.

Craig: Uh huh.

Evan: And no, the kids actually enjoyed them. You know, they were fighting over which ones they would have. Boys went for the camo-style, the girls went for the fun, you know, flowery bits and pieces.

Craig: That seems to make some sense. Oursafefamily.com.

Evan: Oursafefamily.

Craig: Is that the best place to go?

Evan: That is. Oursafefamily.com is where you’d find us.

Craig: Alright.

Evan: And this is called the Paxie Band by the way.

Craig: Paxie. P-A.

Evan: P-A-X-I-E. Paxie Band.

Craig: Pax as in peace.

Evan: Peace. Exactly! Nicely done! You see that?

Craig: Paxie Band.

Evan: Correct.

Craig: Again, oursafefamily.com. We’ve been speaking, of course, with Evan Lazarus. A little bit about our children’s safety and what can be done with some of these newer technology. Thanks for being with us.

Evan: Thank you Craig. Thank you so much.
