Scott Lorenz – Westwind iPhone App Publicity

Airing Date: November 07, 2015

Craig Peterson: If you are a software developer you have for sure been looking at developing apps. In fact, there are millions of them available and there are even more apps that are used inside of businesses that are developed by the business for the business for internal use only. Well, how do you market this stuff if you’re an app developer? How do you get it out? What’s the field looking out? What’s the market doing? And to answer these questions, we have Westwind Communications with us. We’re joined by Scott Lorenz who is president. You do this all the time don’t you Scott?

Scott Lorenz: I sure do and I love promoting tech and apps and start ups and so forth and so.

Craig: Uh huh. Well, it’s a huge market on the app side. It’s getting easier to develop apps so we’re getting more people into them. We’ve got Crowdfunding, which gives people money.

Scott: Right.

Craig: But that doesn’t necessarily help, right? It’s no longer true if you make a better widget that’ll be the path to your door.

Scott: Right. I mean, just because you have a new app that you think is the best thing in the world it may not sell.

Craig: Uh huh.

Scott: Or may not even be downloaded for free. This is Sarila.

Craig: Uh huh.

Scott: Awakening some app developers find out is that people don’t want it even for free.

Craig: Uh huh.

Scott: So, you really go to hustle and market and promote it and that’s what I do on behalf of my clients.

Craig: Now, what’s involved when we’re talking about hustling apps? It’s…

Scott: Well…

Craig: That’s not a physical product.

Scott: Right. It’s a,  it’s…  my focus is publicity.

Craig: Uh huh.

Scott: Publicity. PR, marketing.

Craig: Uh huh.

Scott: TV, radio, newspaper, magazines.

Craig: Uh huh.

Scott: Okay. Interviews with someone like yourself. Interviews with everything from, you know, Good Morning America to National Public Radio to the local station down the street. Whatever you can get, we try to get for our clients to promote their apps.

Craig: Uh huh. Well that makes a lot of sense. You know, I’m a business guy, an entrepreneur. From way back…

Scott: Uh huh.

Craig: I just keep… kept starting businesses, doing different things. Selling them off. Making money. Lifestyle as well. There’s other types of businesses. That’s a whole lot of fun. I started studying. Becoming a student of marketing because I’m a geek from forever, right? And what I found absolutely true is that PR matters more than anything else you can possibly do.

Scott: Thank you and I agree with you obviously, I’m in that business. But, you can take an app that, that’s not getting on the radar.

Craig: Uh huh.

Scott: Okay. And if it gets a good mention in a couple different… like Tech Crunch.

Craig: Uh huh.

Scott: Or some other places in the tech field. Or at… if it’s a consumer app, it gets mentioned at Good Morning America or at National Public Radio, National’s feed, it could change your life

Craig: Yeah, exactly.

Scott: And not only does PR change the life for app developers…

Craig: Uh huh.

Scott: It changes the life for a lot of people…

Craig: Uh huh.

Scott: In a lot of different businesses.

Craig: Uh huh.

Scott: I think this just most recent interview here was somebody on Shark Tank.

Craig: Right.

Scott: Shark Tank is a terrific way to promote an app.

Craig: Uh huh.

Scott: Or any kind of product for that matter. Even if you don’t get funded.

Craig: Uh huh.

Scott: Therefore you’ll have a multi-million dollar, multi-million person audience.

Craig: Right.

Scott: In fact I had one, I told one of my clients they said ‘This app is Shark Tank material’. Go on Shark Tank and let’s do it.

Craig: Uh huh.

Scott: So we started the process. Went to the session in Den… in Texas…

Craig: Uh huh.

Scott: And went through, got through that one. It got through the next one and now we’re waiting. It’s like a… it’s a process.

Craig: It’s a huge process.

Scott: But if he gets on this thing…

Craig: Uh huh.

Scott: It could totally be life-changing for him.

Craig: Well, and it’s not just not get funding there right? Because if you got that PR.

Scott: Right.

Crig: You’re on Shark Tank, there are people watching it that are Angel Investors.

Scott: Sure, sure.

Craig: Even VC Groups who now pursue you.

Scott: Right.

Craig: To pick up that product even though those guys and gals weren’t interested.

Scott: Yeah. PR can change your life and that’s a great example. That’s probably the example that people can really relate to.

Craig: Uh huh.

Scott: In this tech world because a lot of people I know watch that show. And it’s a terrific…

Craig: Yeah, yeah I do. It’s my favorite.

Scott: I watch, I watch the re-runs on CNBC and I’m going, ‘I think I saw that before, but this sounds really interesting. I’m gonna watch it again.’

Craig: Yeah.

Scott: And so that kind of PR is priceless.

Craig: Uh huh.

Scott: It could just change lives.

Craig: Uh huh.

Scott: So you gotta PR in your plan if you want to promote your app.

Craig: Uh huh.

Scott: And needs to be… it doesn’t need to be a huge budget but you’ve got to do it.

Craig: Uh huh.

Scott: You’ve got to do it. You can’t rely on Apple to, you know, do the work for you.

Craig: Right.

Scott: Because they got other things they’re working at.

Craig: Uh huh. Well they don’t care. They’re just gonna wait until something rises above in their store.

Scott: Right.

Craig: The rest… and then they’ll promote it a little bit. I had Olioclip in here again speaking.

Scott: Okay.

Craig: They were crowd-funded to start with.

Scott: Yeah.

Craig: And they’ve been on my show since year one, which is kinda cool. I helped them out a little bit. And it was interesting in talking with them about the path that they took.

Scott: Uh huh.

Craig: And how important PR was for them. And although that’s a physical product, I think it’s much the same process.

Scott: It really is. And I promote everything. I’ve promoted… I’m a PR guy so I really can promote anything.

Craig: Uh huh.

Scott: I’ve done plastic surgeons, new techniques.

Craig: Uh huh.

Scott: We’ve promoted, you know, motorcycle shows.

Craig: Uh huh.

Scott: Hot air balloon events. Public events for cities and communities.

Craig: Uh huh.

Scott: That do a lot of book marketing. And an app is a lot like a book.

Craig: Uh huh.

Scott: Okay, it’s got… it’s very similar. Similar audience, similar type of methodology I use to promote it.

Craig: Right, right.

Scott: So, a good PR guy can promote anything really.

Craig: So people wanna find out more. Westwind Communications, of course, is your company.

Scott: Right.

Craig: The best place for them to go online.

Scott: Is… just remember that how… if you wanna promote your app, it’s iphoneapppublicity…

Craig: Uh huh.

Scott: .com… iphoneapppublicity.com

Craig: Alright, is it iphoneapppublicity.com?

Scott: Yes it is. You got it. That’s with 3 Ps in the middle too.

Craig: Alright, iphoneapppublicity.com. Scott, appreciate you being with us today.

Scott: Thank you Craig, it’s a pleasure.
